Description

PLEASE NOTE –

Lustres form a very thin layer after firing as the metallic compounds are left after the organic solvents have been fired off at around 400c. Use only on glazed porcelain, bone china, earthenware etc as lustre loses its iridescence when applied to matt surfaces.

Application:

Wear a good quality facemask and work in a well-ventilated space.

Make sure that the piece to be overglazed is clean and dust and moisture free.

Use direct from the bottle and thin with a little lustre thinners or turpentine if necessary.

Use a very soft brush to avoid brush marks and apply quickly with a minimum of brushstrokes.  Use a separate brush for each colour to avoid contamination.

Brushes may be cleaned with acetone or thinners and washed in warm soapy water then stored away from dust.

Mixing Lustres:

We generally advise that mixing lustres together can result in muddy colours.  Lustres can be used very successfully side by side to great effect.  Beautiful colours can result from firing one lustre over another lustre but each coat should be fired before applying the next.

Firing Range:

The Kiln Room should be well-ventilated.  Fire to 700c in an oxidation atmosphere with good kiln ventilation (bungs out for the first 300c)  for most lustres to achieve the best outcome.

Storage:

Store away from sunlight and at room temperature – around 20c – and bottles should be kept tightly stoppered after cleaning around the lip of the bottle.
