Abbots glaze workshop by Paul Pepworth

Abbots glaze workshop
Sat 11/02/2012
9:00am to 1:00pm
$25 per person - Payment in advance as number are limited

Abbots mid-fire glazes incorporate a range of glaze types from matte to glossy and from stable to reactive.
It has been found that the glazes are generally tolerant of layered application and the layering process can lead to some quite dramatic textures and effects.

Paul will supply all the glazes, medium and hot wax needed for the workshop.
He will bring some fired pieces and some inspiring photographs.

The Bot Pots will provide banding wheels, washing-up facilities, water buckets and towels.
The activity will spread over 2-3 large tables.
Potters attending should prepare for the event by making small plates and shallow bowls to practise on.
They should bring their own decorating or glazing brushes. Hake brushes are particularly useful.
Those who have previously used Abbots glazes are welcome to bring fired examples for discussion.

During the workshop Paul will demonstrate how liberating it can be to abandon the simplistic process of dipping glazes in favour of pouring, brushing and trailing.
He will show how mixing standard powdered glazes into Abbots universal medium will produce a silky brushable consistency.
These brushing glazes will have superior adhesion to the bisque surface and multiple layers can built up without risk of peeling or crawling.
He will share some useful techniques for using hot wax, both as a decorating tool and to prevent excessively thick layers of glaze from building up on the outsides of bowls or on vertical surfaces.

During the first half of the 4-hour demonstration Paul will combine some of his favourite glazes in familiar combinations.
Then attending potters will be invited to consider the effects they would like to reproduce and Paul will guide them through the process of developing these.

All work produced, including Paul’s examples will be fired at the end of the day.
